Suspect shot by officer after allegedly igniting apartment

The inside of a home, burned, with charred debris everywhere. It was all part of a bizarre incident that ended with a man shot and wounded by police.

Tonight the pregnant girlfriend of the man shot spoke to FOX 10.

"We heard all the clicks on the gun and it was one shot one big shot."

Norma Rubio called 911 after hearing her neighbors arguing last night. It wasn't long after that the young man was shot by Chandler Police.

"They knew he was on a really bad drug and this is the consequence."

Rubio spent the morning helping the suspect's pregnant girlfriend salvage what she could after he set fire to their apartment.

"Everything was turned off, the lights, I saw a shadow in the couch, I knew it was him and that he was going to start saying something," the girlfriend told us. She didn't want to reveal her name.

Afraid to show her face, the young woman describes how her boyfriend accused her of lying about going to the store with her mom and threatened to kill himself. She escaped the home with her brother.

"They were right here, he was hurting himself in his face, if you go in that room over there there's a lot of blood," says Alan Rodriguez, her brother.

Witnesses say the suspect finally confronted Chandler Police and members of the SWAT team at the back door. There's evidence of just how badly he hurt himself before the confrontation.

"There was two dogs and the dog drug him out right here."

Chandler police confirm the suspect was acting erratically that officers followed procedure in an attempt to stop him.

"That was our fear that he was so crazy," says Rubio.

Rubio says the situation could have been worse, that more people could have been hurt.

The suspect remains in the hospital and will most likely face charges of domestic battery and arson.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on routine paid administrative leave.
