DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Friday the Detroit Police Department celebrated domestic violence survivors, mourned the victims and encouraged those who are suffering to seek help.

"Our numbers, in just the Detroit police domestic violence unit alone, were well over 2,000 cases already this year," Sgt. Kyla Williams of the Detroit Police Department says. "We need the victims to come forward and know that they have our support. Once they know they have our support, we'll be with you every step of the way - all the way to the end."

On this day dozens gathered to connect, embrace and share stories, including City Council President Saunteel Jenkins.
