Teen Fights Cancer & Lives Against the Odds

Posted: Updated:

Each of the dozens of beads on Michael Molinar's necklaces represents a type of medical treatment.

"These are called hero beads, this one means a cast... This one means airlifting because I went to the hospital by helicopter once, this one is radiation," Michael explained.

Michael was a high school sophomore when he was diagnosed with bone cancer in 2011. The cancer spread from his leg, to his lung and then his brain.

In May of this year, Michael was told he only had a couple of weeks to live.

"During chemo therapy it was very though. I was getting sick with the fevers," said Michael.

Six months after doctors recommended stopping all treatment and sending Michael to a hospice, Michael is alive and fighting.  "I'm not finished yet, I'm not ready to go any time soon. I have so much I want to do," Michael told FOX 11.

His parents aren't giving up either, they got a 22nd opinion followed by proton radiation to kill the brain tumors and it appears the treatment is working.  You can see the fresh scars on Michael's head after doctors removed the dead tumors.

But now fighting Michael's cancer isn't the family's only battle.  "Because they might feel the cancer is metastasizing, it's repeating over and over and over again they denied the approval for the treatment," said Henry Molinar, Michael's Dad.  They filed an appeal but in the meantime treatments must go on.

"You just continue fighting and never give up," said Maria Giraldo, Michael's mom.

Henry Molinar doesn't work, he takes care of his son24/7.  The family depends in large part, on fund raisers like the one at Chick-Fil-A where the restaurant donated the 20% of the proceeds from customers who mentioned Michael's name.

It's happening Saturday Oct 19 from 11am -8pm at the Chick-Fil-A at the Crossings in Corona.
