MCSO conducting another crime-suppression sweep

Updated:
PHOENIX -

Day two of Sheriff Joe Arpaio's 21st crime suppression sweep began on Saturday.

This time, deputies concentrated on a four square mile area in the southwest valley known for its drug and gang activity.

This operation comes just weeks after a federal judge ordered major changes at MCSO.

Even though an operation like this got the sheriff in trouble, he's not stopping.

"I wanted to send a message that the sheriff is still in business on crime suppression operation. We are still going to do it," said Arpaio.

As a result of federal judge's ruling, the sheriff's office must make major changes.

One of those changes is the appointment of a monitor to watch over the sheriff's office.

That monitor hasn't been chosen yet.

"What do I do? Go on vacation? I am not going to enforce the laws, I am not going to lock up people that violate state laws, I am going to let my people get killed and just forget it because of a monitor? Never going to happen," said Arpaio.

The sheriff says this operation is in response to the shooting death of detention officer Jorge Vargas back in August.

Vargas was gunned down in his own driveway by a teenager.

Deputies fanned out across the southwest valley again Saturday night.

Last night, deputies arrested 22 people, mostly for DUI and weapons violations.

"They know what they are doing. They are professional. We have been doing this and we are going to continue to do our job--continue to do our job in a professional manner," said Arpaio.

Saturday night's operation is expected to last until 2 a.m.
