PCSO: Man shoots another after finding him in bed with wife

A 22-year-old man is facing charges after being shot by a 68-year-old homeowner who says he caught the man sleeping with his wife.

This all happened in the sleepy community of Saddlebrooke, about two hours southeast of Phoenix.

The Pinal County Sheriff describes it as an upper class, active senior community of about 9,000 to 10,000 people.

He says they rarely get calls from there, much less, one like this.

911 operator: "911 what's the location of your emergency?
911 caller: "I need the police over here."
911 operator: "And what happened?"
911 caller: "I found a guy in bed with my wife. I told him to get out and he attacked me, so I shot him."

A 68-year-old man living on the 3800 block of south Apache Peak Drive in Saddlebrooke says he found his 63-year-old wife sleeping a with 22-year-old man in their guesthouse.

"It was 1 o'clock in the morning. His wife wasn't in bed with him. He got worried, went out looking, went to the casita which is a house next to the guest house, and there his wife was sleeping with this man...she's 63-years-old," said Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu.

Deputies say the man she was sleeping with was 22-year-old Stephen Trevor Chapman of Tucson.

911 caller: "She's trying to take care of the guy he's out of prison and she does that for these people, these people who have mental problems."
911 operator: "Has this happened before?"
911 caller: "Some version of it, yeah."

Deputies say the 68-year-old man has Parkinson's and sometimes uses a cane to get around.

He told investigators he used his cane to poke Chapman to wake him up, telling him to get out of his house.

Not only did Chapman refuse, but Sheriff's deputies say he got aggressive.

"The old man, as the young guy's coming at him, fires a warning shot. It ricochets off the wall," said Babeu. "He's well within his rights to take all those measures to protect himself and his property."

Chapman had a minor injury to his hand from a stray pellet from the shotgun.

He was booked on one count of disorderly conduct.

"This young man should have headed the warnings of the older man, not only leave his house, but not to be sleeping with his wife," said Babeu.

At the end of the 911 call, the elderly man urged deputies to hurry.

911 caller: "Things are going on in here, my wife's leaving with this guy."

Deputies got there before the two left.

In the 911 call, the elderly man says Chapman just got out of prison, but the Department of Corrections has no record of him.

The Sheriff is looking to see if he has a previous criminal record.

The case has been turned over to the Pinal County Attorney's Office to review other possible charges.
