UA to provide health info to Hispanic women

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Hispanic women in Pima County will have access to more health information thanks to a grant received by the University of Arizona.

The school's Center of Excellence in Women's Health will use the $878,000 award to lead a multidisciplinary team that will be focused on reaching out to underserved Hispanic women throughout the county.

The effort will focus on cervical cancer, sexually transmitted infections and depression. Those are three priority health issues identified by the Pima County Cervical Cancer Prevention Partnership.

Lead researcher Dr. Francisco Garcia says Hispanics are the largest and fastest growing ethnic group in Pima County, making up more than one-third of the population. Of this number, he says 20 percent of adults and 12 percent of children do not have health insurance.
