Deputies: Motorcyclist punches college student in road rage attack
DELAND, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
Devin Roberts, 18, says he was in his car last week on his way to school at the intersection of Kepler Rd. and State Road 44 in DeLand, when he got into a minor accident with a motorcyclist.
"I didn't know if it was my fault or his, so I was panicking," Roberts said.
According to the arrest report the motorcycle driver, 72-year-old Thomas Mottle of Miami Shores got off his motorcycle and walked to the victim's car, allegedly threatening him with a knife.
"I put both my hands in the air and I told him, 'Please, I'm just a kid! Please stop!" Roberts said.
But deputies say the road rage didn't stop there. According to a report, Mottle reached in the car and punched Roberts twice in the face.
"I didn't know how to react to the situation. I got hit, and I knew I wasn't in any place to be trying to defend myself, because I'm still in my car," Roberts said.
Fortunately, nearby drivers witnessed the incident and one of them called 911. Mottle was arrested soon after. Deputies say he admitted to hitting the victim. Meanwhile Roberts is just grateful for those witnesses.
"If they wouldn't have pulled over I have no idea how the situation would have played out," Roberts said
Mottle was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and burglary with assault.
