DPD offers carjacking awareness training and prevention

DETROIT (WJBK) -

Detroit Police Chief James Craig wants to crack down on the number of carjackings in the city.

Carjackings are on the rise, and one of the worst areas is said to be the entire length of 7 Mile Road going from West to East. It's been called "carjack city".

Police say because of heightened security on vehicles,  thieves wait until a person is in the car, so they can run up and try to steal it. Police Chief Craig says he was almost a victim when someone ran toward his car and tried to get in.

Police recommend drivers stay aware of their surroundings at all times to prevent being a victim. They say if you see someone who looks dangerous, leave the area immediately.  If you see someone else being carjacked, you can call 1-800-242-HEAT to report it. H.E.A.T. stands for help eliminate auto thefts.
