Gay Marriage Legalized In NJ

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

Superior Court Judge Mary Jacobson signed off on a bill that legalized gay marriage in New Jersey. Now, many opponents are saying that this decision is judicial activism because she made this decision without involving the legislature or the voters.

Governor Christie has officially withdrawn his appeal and is allowing this ruling by the Supreme Court to stand.

Senator Raymond Lesniak held an event last night to celebrate one of the first same-sex marriages in New Jersey. He also chimed in on the Governor’s stance on this issue.

“Governor Christie I think has really lost his heart and soul on this issue, selling out to his presidential aspirations.” He said.

The lead plaintiffs at the center of this fight for marriage equality in New Jersey are Louise Walpin and Marsha Shapiro. They were part of a lawsuit filed by Garden State Equality to make sure that every same sex couple in the Garden State enjoy the same federal benefits as regular couples.

Jay Lassiter from Garden State Equality discussed the ruling by a single judge in a superior court.

“To be perfectly honest, the judges in New Jersey and everywhere in America are beholden to the Constitution, so I’m no less troubled by a judge having that power than I am with a governor having that power. Now the governor has a lot of political considerations that have nothing to do with the Constitution. He’s a very astute political animal. They always call it activism, I as well whenever the ruling goes not the way we like it.” He said.

Even though the governor has withdrew his appeal and is allowing gay marriage to move forward in the Garden State, Marsha and Louise still do not plan on voting for him in the upcoming election.

“We have worked very very hard to have our relationship validated and legalized in the state of New Jersey. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t have the same civil rights as every other New Jerseyan.” Shapiro said.

Since the ruling, the ladies said that their new marital status feels really good.

“We have been given our pride our dignity and first-class citizenship in New Jersey because of this.” Shapiro said.
