For Halloween, Carve Your Pumpkin - Put A Pin In It!

Posted: Updated:

For today's Put A Pin In It segment we're featuring Jessica Garvey, the author of ‘The Hot Hostess Handbook For The Young, Broke, And Fabulous.'

Our first pin is a spooky cauldron for your Halloween party or even your front door.

Making fun cupcakes yourself can always be a last minute challenge, a bunch of other fun Halloween items we've found.

  • How to select the pumpkin: you want to choose a pumpkin that fits the design you wan to create.  I always like to go for ones with character.
  • Opening up your pumpkin: I like to open the pumpkin from the bottom, when you take off the bottom you'll see many of the seeds come out with it.  It also creates a stable, flat bottom.
  • Getting started carving: you want to clean the inside of the pumpkin really well, thinning the walls to about ¾ of an inch. This helps it last longer and make it easier to carve.
  • Carving using stencils: Using stencils like these from Pumpkin Masters lets anyone create a masterful design, even if you aren't an artist.  Follow the directions to apply the stencil and then begin to use the tools to poke holes in the pumpkin.  Tip: start from middle of the design and work your way out. Resist the urge to push the pieces into the pumpkin, wait till your done and then push from the inside out.

Carving with kids, safety tips: Pumpkin carving is a great family activity.  Kids can carve easily with the right tools.  Kitchen knives are the most common carving tool, but they can slip.  Using a carving kit like these from Pumpkin Masters makes carving for kids easy and safer.  You can pick up carving kits at Safeway, Target, Walmart or craft stores.

Keep pumpkins looking good through Halloween: Using an LED light instead of a candle will help preserve your pumpkin.

Pumpkin carving patterns help novice carvers create great designs.

Tools like these from Pumpkin Masters are safer than using a kitchen knife, especially for kids.  They are designed specifically for pumpkin carving.
Using LED Lights will help your pumpkin last longer and are safer than candles.
