WILMINGTON, De. -

The Headmaster has resigned from one of the Delaware's most prestigious prep schools as the school tells parents the resignation comes after a child abuse investigation.

Parents picking up their kids today at the Tower Hill School told FOX 29 they are in absolute shock over the email they got this morning informing them Headmaster Christopher Wheeler has resigned.

The news comes amid allegations of child abuse.Wheeler has not been charged with any crime.

Christopher Wheeler agreed to step down. The State Attorney General's office confirmed there is an investigation.

Sources tell us law enforcement agents with the state were on campus until about midnight serving search warrants on the Headmasters house and his offices. Wheeler has vacated the house.

The school tells us in a statement the allegations do not involve current students at the school. Students were notified of the resignation and were told in an age appropriate manner in school.

It happened hours after agents with the State Attorney General's Office served a search warrant on the headmaster's sprawling on campus residence and school offices late Tuesday night.

Wheeler was the Tower Hill School's headmaster for nine years. The school plans to announce an acting headmaster by the end of the week.

The school, which is consistently ranked one of the best in the country, is also alma mater of TV's Doctor Oz., a former governor and Delaware's U.S. senator.
