Train derailment near Sanford, 1 dead

UPDATE: SANFORD, Fla.  -- The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal train derailment near the construction site for the Sanford SunRail station, off of SR 46 in Sanford. The derailment is near, but is not part of, the main railroad line on which SunRail trains will run. At approximately 6:30 a.m., a train carrying 10 cars loaded with gravel were being pushed backwards on the yard track, when four of the cars derailed.

The conductor (spotter) was an occupant on the outside of the last car when the four cars overturned. The conductor was crushed as he fell under the falling car and pronounced deceased on scene. He has been identified as 36-year-old Christopher Putfark of Deltona. Putfark was an employee of Conrad Yelvington Distibutors, Inc. Troopers will continue to investigate this industrial incident.
