Gwinnett County leaders propose new emergency alert system

Posted: Updated:
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

Gwinnett County leaders believe they have come up with a way to make things safer in Georgia's largest school district.

Panic buttons would be installed in all of the district 132 schools as well as those in the city of Buford.

In the case of an emergency, an administrator would push the button, immediately notifying the county's 911 center that something is wrong.

"The duress would then alert the 911 call center and activate a video feed from cameras located at each of the schools," said Chief Charles Walters of the Gwinnett County Police Department.

The system would cost an estimated $5 million. Officials hope voters will approve a sales tax extension this November to pay for it.

There's no word when it would be operational, but work would reportedly begin immediately.

Leaders know of no other school district that has an alert system this advanced -- one they say could help police get the upper hand in the case of an emergency.
