Petition calls for resignation of Archbishop John Nienstedt

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

A St. Paul parishioner has started an online petition calling for the resignation of Archbishop John Nienstedt.

Thomas Lyons, a member of the church for over 70 years, collected about 70 signatures on his petition by Friday afternoon.

"I'm into it pretty far, and I'm fed up," Lyons said.

Lyons is convinced the church needs a fresh start.

"He has to get out of there. That's it. He gets out, we get a new person in and we build it right from the ground up," he said. "He is a head of a major problem. He's the steward, and as a steward, has he done the right job? No. Has he fulfilled his duty? No, he has not," Lyons said.

In a column published Thursday in the online version of The Catholic Sprit, Nienstedt apologized and ordered an outside review of all clergy files at the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. The archbishop acknowledges "some serious mistakes" and vowed "prudent and ongoing disclosure."

The archdiocese has been under intense scrutiny since whistleblower Jennifer Haselberger went to the Ramsey County attorney's office with claims that church leaders mishandled and covered-up allegations of abuse by priests.

An official told Fox 9 News the archdiocese had no comment on the petition.

Earlier this week, Father Bill Deziel of the Church of St. Peter in North St. Paul called for Nienstedt's resignation, suggesting a "do over with our archdiocesan leadership."
