An inmate tried to kill himself in Volusia County Saturday. Brando Haught, a spokesperson with the Volusia County Sheriff's office said Luis Toledo, tried to commit suicide with pieces of a bathroom mirror at the Sheriff's office Operation Center at 1330 Indian Lake Road in Daytona Beach.
Toledo is the person of interest in the case of the death of Deltona mom, 28-year-old Yessenia Suarez and her two kids, 8-year-old Michael Otto and 9-year-old Thalia Otto. Toledo, 31 was Suarez's husband.
Volusia County Sheriff said Toledo was back at the Sheriff's office to talk to investigators when he was allowed to use a bathroom. A deputy guarded him, but Toledo decided to use that time to make his move.
"Toledo forced the doorway shut, smashed the mirror and used the mirror shards to attempt suicide by cutting himself,'' Haught said in an email. "Deputies were able to quickly access the room and secure Toledo."
Toledo was taken by EVAC ambulance to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach for treatment for his cuts at about 11:30 a.m. His injuries were not life-threatening.
At this time, Toledo is only facing charges of faces only a charge of domestic battery. He's accused of slapping his wife, Yessenia Suarez, Tuesday during an argument at her place of employment in Lake Mary.
Suarez and her kids haven't been seen since Tuesday. However, after an intense search for the mom and her two kids, Volusia County investigators said on Thursday that they believed the mother and her children were dead.
That's also when they named Toledo a person of interest in their death and disappearance. There hasn't been any charges filed in that case yet.
