South Jersey Residents Sue To Shut Down Gun Range

Posted: Updated:
GLOUCESTER COUNTY, N.J. -

The Forest Meadows' age 55 and older community in Sicklerville is supposed to be a quiet place where folks enjoying their retirement can live peacefully in South Jersey.

Some residents say their community is anything but peaceful when the gunfire starts at a nearby gun range.

"It sounds like the Battleship New Jersey is back there," James Mair told Fox 29.

"It's like cannons going off every day," Linda Damiano said. "It's Friday, Saturday, Sunday, all through the week, seven days a week. It just never stops."

The gun range has long been the target of complaints from residents. They say hundreds, if not thousands of shots are fired some days from the Iron Horse Pistol and Gun Club.

Residents complained to Gloucester Township officials about the noise. They even sent a petition to the township to shut the range down.

Now some residents here have filed a lawsuit seeking to end the gun fire.

"Shut it down," Mair said. "One of these days an accident is going to happen, then they'll shut it down I guess."

"We can't sit out, we can't talk with each other. It's just unbelievable. Too loud," Damiano said.

According to residents, two homes on Monticello Drive have even been hit by stray shots they believe came from the range.

No one was injured and police could not verify where the shots came from for sure, but it's clear the range has caused concerns.

"A ricochet will go a mile. We're only 600 feet from the place. There's a school that's 1500 feet," Mair explained.

"Stop it. Close it down, give us peace of mind, just stop the shooting altogether," Damiano said.

Stuart Platt, a lawyer for the gun club, refused to comment citing the pending litigation.

Other neighbors say the gunfire doesn't bother them. They say they also hear gunfire from another nearby gun range too.

"I have no problem with it at all we hear it. We live at the end of the street, we hear the shots. They don't bother us at all," said neighbor Vicki Labinski.

"If I could I'd move but I probably can't sell the house. Nobody will buy it because of that noise," Mair added.

A lawyer for the township says he has not seen the lawsuit at this point and would not comment. The township chief of police wrote a letter 18 months ago saying he had safety concerns for the residents.

Reportedly the gun range has changed the direction of the gunfire to appease the resident's safety concerns.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
