PHOENIX -

The city of Phoenix is about to launch a new form of public transportation that will also become available in the east valley. It unveiled the 'Grid Bike Share' program.

From any smartphone, you'll be able to locate a bike and reserve it. The cost to ride is $5 an hour, $30 a month, or $79 a year.

Student discounts are also available.

The bike locks are solar-powered and have GPS technology.

And, in an effort to prevent theft, the rider's credit or debit card is charged the full amount of the bike if they're not returned.

"Starting early next year you're going to have about 500 bikes roaming the streets in the city of Phoenix, and we plan to add in the spring an additional 500 in Tempe and Mesa. So regionally it's going to be a 1,000 bike system which we hope to grow," says Josh Squire CEO CycleHop.

"We know that people are changing the way they want to get around. A lot of younger people are not getting drivers licenses and bicycling has become a bigger and bigger part of the way people ride around our city and get around, so we're really happy to be able to provide this to folks," says Matthew Heil, City of Phoenix Street Transportation Department.

If a business or other property wants to host a bike station, you can suggest a location online.
