4 dead in Mount Vernon house fire

Posted: Updated:

Firefighters battled a deadly fire at a 2-story home in Westchester County.

The blaze broke out around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday at 11 S. Bond St. in Mount Vernon.

At least four people were killed including a couple and their two adult children, reported LoHud.com

The Journal News says a man tried to drag his brother out of the basement. It says one of the brothers died and the other was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. His condition was not immediately known.

The Red Cross is helping six adults and one child with emergency and shelter needs.

The white, single-family home was engulfed in heavy smoke and flames overnight. By sunrise, the flames appeared to be out but smoke remained visible.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Mount Vernon Mayor Ernest Davis said the fire appears to have started when a car parked in the back of the house caught fire and ignited the multiple dwelling home.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
