NAPERVILLE, Ill. (FOX 32 News) -

Halloween is just two days away, but before you let your kids go knocking on strangers doors for candy, you need to do your homework.

Sheriff's Police Executive Officer Brian White explained how parents can keep their children away from registered sex offenders while trick-or-treating.

But how do you know where they are?

White is in charge of keeping tabs on convicted sexual predators and tells FOX 32 that keeping your kids safe is all about doing your online homework and talking to your kids about the fact that there are people out there who, if given the chance, will do them harm.

"Talk to your kids and tell them, do not go to houses that you're not familiar with," White explains. "If the lights aren't on or something doesn't look right, do not go to that house. Don't go up there alone. Never, even if invited in addition a home, unless you know that person, do not go inside that residence. Stay outside. Stay your distance. Keep a safe parameter."

There are some websites whose sole purpose is to let you know who those child sexual predators are and where they are living. Officer White suggests parents visit the state police website or the sheriff's website for your county. There, you can enter your zip code and learn where the registered sex offenders are living in your neighborhood. It's also a good idea to check the sites regularly for updates.

The law says child predators can't give out candy and they are encouraged not to even answer the door if a kid comes knocking.
