Driver charged in deadly Cobb County crash

Posted: Updated:
COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

The driver allegedly involved in a deadly crash in Cobb County over the weekend remains behind bars without bond.

Dannie Mondor surrendered to authorities at Cobb County Jail on Tuesday afternoon, according to his authorities.

Mondor is accused of driving a motor home that started a deadly chain-reaction crash on Interstate 75 southbound near Delk Road in Marietta on Saturday afternoon.

According to police, the driver of the RV was attempting to change lanes behind a Toyota Camry, but instead ended up striking the left rear panel of the car.  The Camry slammed into a Toyota Prius, causing it to rollover several times, police said. The Prius struck two other vehicles while it overturned.

A passenger in the Prius, 40-year-old Bradley Braland, died in the accident.

While police said the driver was wanted on hit-and-run charges, Mondor's attorney, Scott Semrau, told FOX 5 on Tuesday that his client did stop after the accident and talk to police.

"Mr. Mondor, immediately following the accident, stopped his vehicle," said Semrau. "He thereafter called the police department. He waited until the police came to his location. He made a full report about the accident. He gave them all of his personal information and then he was told it was okay for him to leave, which he did. He was some days later contacted by Marietta Police Department. The very next morning he sought counsel."

The attorney said that Mondor, who is Canadian and owns a home in Florida, wasn't aware that police were searching for him.

Semrau said that the evidence will prove his client's innocence. He said that when police inspect his camper, they will find no signs of damage to the front quarter-panel, which authorities said struck another vehicle to initiate the accident.

Marietta police confirmed that Mondor did make a police report at some point after the accident.

Mondor is charged with improper lane change, felony hit-and-run and felony first degree vehicular homicide. He made his first court appearance on Wednesday morning.

Prosecutors considered him their key witness, a longtime Gwinnett developer given immunity to spill what he knew about corruption inside county government. David Jenkins testified before a Gwinnett grand jury in 2010. He also met multiple times with prosecutors. Those interviews were videotaped. Four years later, prosecutors agreed to a no contest plea bargain with former commissioner Kevin Kenerly on one count of bribery. He will serve 10 years on probation and pay a $10,000 fine.
