Surveys Reveal American Attitudes Towards The Supernatural

Posted: Updated:

It's time for Halloween and ghosts. We all know that ghosts aren't real, right? Well, not so fast, according to surveys. For example, according to a 2009 Pew Research poll, 18% of US adults say that they've seen or been in the presence of a ghost. Also, 29% say that they have felt in touch with someone who has already died.

2,003 people responded to this survey. A further breakdown shows some interesting data.

For example, 33% of female respondents, compared to 26% of male respondents report having been in touch with someone who has died. Also, 41% of African American respondents, compared to 29% of Caucasian respondents report having been in touch with the dead. Also, 21% of self-identifying democrats report having seen a ghost, compared to 11% of Republicans.

A Gallup poll from 2005 also shows interesting data. In one poll, nearly 37% of Americans report that they believe in haunted houses. Also, 41% believe in some form of extrasensory perception (ESP). Analysis by Gallup shows that 73% of Americans believe in at least one form of supernatural phenomenon. 1,002 adults were surveyed for this study.
