Online records confirm more than 1,200 sex offenders in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties are unaccounted for, meaning they are not in compliance with the state registry.
Wayne Co. has the most missing sex offenders.

"With the number 1,200, it is a significant issue that we are addressing throughout the state. The largest problem, from my perspective, is going to be having the appropriate amount of funding and manpower, really, with all these budget cutbacks," says Michigan State Trooper Craig Tuer who runs the MSP Sex Offender Registry.

Tuer says MSP is following tips from the public, conduction sex offender sweeps and charging those who don't comply with the registration.
