Antique Car Models Stolen

Orlando, Florida-An antique toy collector says thieves keep taking off with his model cars. He hopes police stop the break-ins."Those empty spaces were where the cars were taken from." Orlando police are on the lookout for some stolen sports cars, of a smaller scale, "They're antique collectibles."

Colin Bentham says a thief stole the classic cars right from the shelves of his store, TMJ Antique Collectable Toys off Orange Blossom Trail. "From this shelf, this shelf and this shelf they took the cars."

Tiny toys made from melted metal. Colin has had some of them for 25 years, "They're actually 118 scale of diecast models of BMW, Ferrari's and Jaquars." Colin tells us, 14 models worth around $1,000 were taken. "This is a 1988, 3 series BMW. This is a Z-8, 1996. So most of the models taken were identical to these models. Very upsetting."

He says repairs will cost around another thousand dollars, "They removed the entire strip of metal that holds the glass in and they took the glass out." Police say they searched for the missing window, even looking through the dumpster over there, but found nothing, "They took the entire sheet of glass."

Colin says this is the 2nd time in 3 months, that car crooks took off with his collectables, "So you think there's a person out there just eyeing your models? I believe so because why would you take Ferrari's, Jaquars and BMW's? Unless you have a keen eye for distinct items. And is there a big market to re-sell these things? Definitely."

Colin's not sure who's been driving off with his antiques, but hopes to find out soon, "I believe it's someone who frequents the store. Because where the cars were taken from, the cameras were blind. So it must be someone who knew where the cameras were."

Colin has been in business for 37 years, he wants police to put the brakes on the burglaries, "More foot patrol, more awareness of the fact that we're here trying to survive."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Orlando Police Department.
