Tech Check: iPad Air

ATLANTA -

Helium is lighter than air. The new iPad is not that light, but it is noticeably lighter than the previous iPods. FOX 5's Doug Evans got a first-hand look at the new iPad Air thanks to the folks at Verizon.

Just taking a hold of the tablet, one can tell the difference. It is about 20 percent slimmer than the previous model which also leads it to be lighter. About a half pound was shaved off due to the slimming of the iPad. This allows users to actually pick it up in one hand with a greater comfort.

Despite the change in outer dimensions, the screen size remains the same. A 9.7 inch display graces the front of the Air and the tradition of rich clarity screens continues.

Apple enhanced the on-board sound by replacing the mono speaker and installing two stereo speakers which provide a better sound experience even if the device is flat on its back.

The processor is also faster, allowing multitaskers to do what they do best. Mix that with the latest iOS 7 and the Air has a faster, smoother transition between screens and display design.

The camera really gets a good upgrade with a new rear-facing HD camera so people on the other end of video chats can see you better.

The 16 gig WiFi version retails starting around $499. Verizon is offering a $100 off with a two year agreement and will pay out an addition $300 to trade in the old version.

This time last year, we were still posing the question: Should you buy a laptop of a tablet for you school aged child? That debate appears to be over and the tablets have won.
