Delaware Bay Communities Still Struggling After Sandy

Posted: Updated:
CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.J. -

In Cumberland County, along the 'other' Jersey shore, families are frustrated, waiting for insurance claims to be paid, waiting for the state to come to their aid.

Fox 29's Dave Schratwieser, who spent time at Fortescue in the days after Sandy, returned there to see their struggle.

Along the Delaware Bay in Cumberland County, Superstorm Sandy isn't just a memory. For some it's still a nightmare. A year later, you don't have to go too far to see the devastation Sandy left behind.

As FOX 29 first showed you in the days after Hurricane Sandy roared through here, damage was widespread and in some cases devastating. Some here lost almost everything.

In Fortescue, residents got right to work cleaning up in the days after the powerful hurricane. They were hoping to rebuild quickly with the help of insurance money, or state and federal aid. Bill Keefer and his wife Mary Lou say the help never came.

Mayor Robert Campbell tells FOX 29 that while Cumberland County was on the list of 10 counties damaged by Superstorm Sandy because less than 1 percent of the county ratable properties were damaged in the storm, they are not eligible for most of the state and federal funds to rebuild.

They did get a million bucks to restore some of the beachfront and money to temporarily rebuild a washed out road in Gandys Beach, but much of the bulkhead is damaged, leaving these bayside communities unprotected if another storm hits.

Work is still underway to put this shore community back together. Bulkheads are slowly being rebuilt, docks and decks are being repaired and homes are being renovated. Some are a total loss, others have simply been demolished.

The signs on the local church say have faith; a sign on Bill and Mary Lou Keefer's home says hope.

It's probably going take a bit of both to see this town bounce back, Schratwieser reported.
