A popular Cedartown football player is recovering from a serious head injury suffered during a game on Friday night.

Medics took high school senior Caleb Ely to Floyd Medical Center, where he underwent surgery.

The 18-year-old defensive back and wide receiver collapsed on the sidelines late in the third quarter.

"We've looked at the video and we can't pinpoint any one spot where something happened and you say, ‘That is where he got injured,'" said Cedartown football coach Scott Hendrix. "He ran to the sideline, where we got him to a doctor and from there he deteriorated."

Caleb's parents were at the game and said they noticed something was wrong with their son.

"There was a play where Caleb went back to his position and I could tell he seemed a little unsteady," said Malindy Ely, Caleb's mother. "At the next play, I looked up and he was walking off the field and he was staggering and I saw him fall into his teammates…actually one of the coach's arms, I believe."

After being rushed to the hospital, Caleb underwent surgery for extensive swelling in his brain.

"They removed a large portion of the right side of his skull and that gave his brain room to swell," said Malindy Ely. "That swelling will go down hopefully soon and we will be home and doing well, and they plan to put the piece of his skull back in on the Christmas break."

The Ely family said the Cedartown community and their faith in God have helped them make it through the difficult last few days. They said that thankfully, the worst is over and Caleb is now on the mend.

"He is doing fabulous considering the extent of his injury and how very lucky he is to be alive. He's been sitting up and he's walked and he's eating solid food," said Malindy Ely.

If all continues to go well, Caleb could go home sometime next week.
