Safety conference held for seniors in East Point

EAST POINT, Ga. -

Dozens of seniors turned out for a safety conference held just for them on Monday in East Point.

Several agencies in Fulton County took part in the event, which was called "Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (SALT)".

"What we're doing is just to make people be aware of safety in their home as far as the police department, fire department and safety all around," said Bobby Richardson, the president of the SALT Safety Council.

Fulton County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Jimmy Carter said seniors are increasing becoming victims of crime.

"Crime is impacting the seniors at a rate and at a level and a velocity more than they have in the past," Carter said.

With the upcoming holiday season, East Point Police Chief Woodrow Bleu gave seniors on hand safety tips.

"Go out in the daytime. Go out in numbers. Change your path coming and going. Make yourself less of a victim, or less of a target," Bleu said.

Officials at the safety conference warned seniors to be especially alert during the holidays by keeping their shopping bags and packages out of site and in the trunk of their car. They also suggest that ladies keep their cell phones in their pocket instead of a purse so they can still dial 911 if a thief steals it.
