After the primary's ballot counting debacle, and the lack of voter confidence that followed, the president of the NAACP, Rev. Wendell Anthony, says they requested federal monitors from the Department of Justice, who are now being sent in to keep tabs on the Detroit election.

"We talked with the clerk. The clerk has assured to us and the community that they have control over the electoral process," --

Both mayoral candidates took to the streets in the final hours before voting begins, showing up at shopping centers and even popular street intersections, spreading their last-minute messages to the public.

Fox 2 caught up with Sheriff Benny Napoleon at the new Meijer in Detroit on Eight Mile Road.

"If you want to be safe in this city - I'm your guy. I'm the person that you should go pull that lever for," he says.

Mike Duggan and his supporters held signs and talked to voters at Harper and Cadieux during rush hour.

"If you're tired of living in the dark because the street lights don't work, and if you're tired of living in fear because the cops don't show up, and if you're tired of living in blight because nobody deals with the abandoned houses, if you vote for me my record is turning things around and getting 'em fixed," says Duggan.

Rev. Anthony is urging everyone to go to the polls and make their vote count.

"[The election monitor] is not for any candidate. This is for the citizens of Detroit to make sure that, regardless of who your choice is, that it should be protected."

Butch Hollowell of Mike Duggan's campaign administration says federal monitors have been in town for years during the election due to a history of voter intimidation.
