Parents In Fla. Protest Over School Textbook Chapter

Posted: Updated:

Dozens of people protest outside a Florida school to express concerns about a textbook. Specifically, it's the one chapter inside that history book that's bothering some parents.

The issue is one chapter dedicated to Islam. Parents are upset because they say that there should be chapters dedicated to other religions, as well. The protest took place yesterday outside the Volusia County School Board offices in Deland, Florida.

While some believe that the 31 page chapter has to be taught, they want the situation to be equal for other religious texts.

Tempers flared at the protest and a woman and a young man started arguing. The young man says his girlfriend attends the high school.

"That's why there's things like textbooks, to supplement teachers," the man argued.

"If it's gonna be equal, it has to be equal for everybody, not one group!" the woman countered.

Protestors had planned to voice their concerns at the district's school board meeting, but that meeting was quickly canceled in the interest of public safety. School officials are saying they received information from law enforcement that forced them to cancel the meeting.
