Job fair held for military veterans

ATLANTA -

Veterans hopeful of finding employment attended a job fair in Atlanta on Thursday.

When U.S. service members return home, they often have a hard time convincing employers their military skills can transfer to corporate America.

Army veteran Lawrence Rogers spoke with recruiters from the Roswell Police Department at the Atlanta Diversity, Veteran, Professional Career Fair on Thursday. He has a master's degree in accounting, but says the only employers giving him a serious look are law enforcement agencies. Atlanta Police Department recruiter officer Angela Moore says there's a reason for that.

"We're a paramilitary organization. Therefore, their experience is always welcome," Moore said. "You know, they have leadership skills. There's a lot they can bring to the table."

More than a dozen companies participated in the career expo. Most say they make a sincere effort to hire veterans.

Kroger recruiter Daniele Williams says her company values their discipline and work ethic.

"We actually have a program within our organization where we look to hire those veterans because they bring in that diversity," Williams said. "They bring in that leadership."

But 14-year veteran and former Navy recruiter Nathan Walker says companies don't always value his military training and job fairs don't always pan out even though they welcome veterans.

"They're working, but unfortunately for me personally, it's been a struggle for me for the year that I've been out," said Walker.
