LIRR massacre documentary 20 years later

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The trains are newer but the Merillon Station looks very much as it did on December 7, 1993, when Colin Ferguson killed six people and wounded 19 others before passengers tackled him as he tried to reload his pistol. He intentionally shot whites and Asians.

Robert Giugliano, one of his victims who survived, recalls how Ferguson methodically shot as many people as he could. It took Giugliano 10 years to recover but only after he got divorced, lost several jobs and felt lost.

He was interviewed as part of a documentary film called "Long Island Railroad Massacre," which opens November 15. Producer and director Charlie Minn grew up on Long Island. One victim of the victims, Mi Kyung Kim, 28, attended his high school. He does not to want murderer Ferguson remembered. He said his documentary is for the shooting victims.

His film opens with Carolyn McCarthy and Joyce Gorycki placing flowers on the shooting anniversary. Both lost their husbands. Carolyn's son Kevin was also critically wounded. McCarthy later ran for Congress to push for gun control. It has not succeeded. She is now battling lung cancer.

Security experts say another massacre could happen again. But it is less likely because of measures taken to prevent it.

In 1993 because of the massacre the MTA allowed off-duty law enforcement to ride the LIRR for free. Security experts say many off-duty armed officers commute on the LIRR.

Other security measures include security cameras and increased train patrols. Ferguson is serving a 315-year sentence. Giugliano once asked to have five minutes alone with him.
