The Jacobson Family looks forward to a "cock-a-doodle-doo" every day from their rooster Mildred. When Milfred went missing from his backyard pen on Sunday afternoon, Maureen, Jeff and daughter Hannah became absolutely frantic.
"We couldn't find him. We were really sad," Maureen said. "I was crying. We were hysterical, and we missed our little Milfred."
For hours, the Jacobsons searched for the 7-month-old Americana hybrid bird all over the neighborhood. They even went to social media for help, posting photographs.
After 24 hours, they presumed the beloved rooster to be dead, until he literally came a knockin' on the front office door at Oakland Avenue Charter School, where Maureen works. The school is almost a mile away, across a busy roadway, in a place where Milfred's never been before.
"They said, 'We think we have him here at the school, trying to get into the front office.' So one of the teachers and the parents who were my Facebook friends knew he was missing, and I ran down the stairs to see him," said Maureen. "Sure enough, it was Milfred."
The rooster has quite a personality, taking command in the kitchen or hanging out in his favorite spot in front of a bathroom mirror, where he loves to admire his plumage.
So the big question is how did Milfred fly the coup?
"It's still a mystery," said Jeff. "Until he learns proper English, we still won't know the full truth of the matter."
What does matter is that Milfred his back home, safe and sound.
