Baby delivered after shooting of pregnant mother taken off life support

(WJBK) -

The baby delivered by emergency cesarean section after her mother was fatally shot is taken off life support Friday night, nearly a week after being born.

"They did the MRI and the EEG, and the test came back and they said that her brain is 97 percent dead and her nervous system is completely dead, so there was nothing else they could do," says Autumn Powell. Powell is the sister of the baby's mother.

Detroit police say a man fatally shot the baby's mother, Taeler Shaltry, and a second person, 25-year-old Brandon Webb. A third victim was also critically wounded, 75-year-old Bertram Rutledge.

The attacker first shot Webb outside a house on Meyers Street, then shot Shaltry and Rutledge as they came outside to help, police say.

Shaltry was nine months pregnant at the time, and already a mother of two boys, ages three and six.

Police have not reported any arrests.
