Locals Pitch In After Philippines Devastation

Posted: Updated:
KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. -

After days of watching the pictures of the Philippines, Rowena David can't bear to watch the news anymore. The devastation of her homeland is too much to handle.

"I just don't want to watch all these people who lost everything. The last news I saw is that the father was holding his dead daughter. I said I don't want to watch the news anymore," Rowena David said.

From thousands of miles away David and her husband are doing the only thing they can think of to help.

As owners of Philly Pinoy Filipino Grocery Store they are gathering donations of food and clothing to send to storm ravaged areas.

"They're crying. They're coming in the store. They are crying about what's happening. They cannot contact their family. It's so touching," Hyen David said.

The David's are among the estimated 12,000 Filipino Americans living in the Philadelphia area. They're calling on anyone who can help one box bag of rice, one box at a time.

Solomon James served in the Philippines while serving in the military. He still has friends there and came to buy supplies.

"I know what these people are going through. I'm sure they are confused dazed," James said. "You have to feel for people. Like I told other people it could be you. It could be you"

The David's are hoping to team up with the local Red Cross to help streamline the cargo shipments which could take up to two months.

"People have lost everything. They have no homes, they have nothing. They don't even have families anymore," David said.
