Family seeks closure in case of missing WWII vet

Posted: Updated:

A local family is continuing to search for a World War II veteran almost 60 years after his disappearance.

The Rev. Aldren Sadler said that his uncle's dog tag was found among the wreckage of a World War II plane in Southeast Asia back in 2003.

"It represents hope. I think there's a chance that we will find his remains and he will come home," said Sadler.

The family received word from the Department of Defense that the wreckage of a military plane that went down in Burma back in 1944 was stumbled upon by the natives. Sadler's uncle, Sgt. Johnny Williams, and six others were on that plane.

Nine years later, the family is still waiting for Sgt. Williams to come home.

Williams' have since died; now it's up to his two nephews to carry on hope and carry on the search.

"I get sort of teary-eyed, but as service members, we have a record that our goal is, in the event we should lose one of our members, the goal is to bring them back home," said Aubrey Webb, a retired commander in the U.S. Navy and a nephew of Sadler.

The Department of Defense has confirmed that they are actively working to identify the remains. Williams was just 26 at the time. They say the process has been hindered off and on by a lack of federal funding.

The family remains patient, resting its faith on the rusty military dog tag buried deep in war.

They are not alone. The Department of Defense says that there are 74,000 soldiers listed as missing in action from World War II.
