PHOENIX -

Arizona Senator John McCain and the city of Phoenix announced plans to get every homeless veteran in the city off the streets by Christmas.

Mayor Greg Stanton has joined forces with a group called Project H3 Vets.  That stands for home, health and hope. The city is working along with Maricopa County and community partners to help provide housing, treatment for mental health issues or substance abuse, and to also provide assistance with getting employment.

The Mayor says a recent count showed there are about 80 homeless vets right now in Phoenix.

"If you provide not only a roof over people's head, but the support services, that homeless person that you walk by and may not even give a second thought to that person with a roof over his or her head with the support services, that person can get a job and be tax paying members of society like you and I, but for the grace of God though any of us and with our veterans who have served our country, it's an honor that we are able to provide these services and make this very important announcement," said Stanton.

McCain added, "I am proud that the city of Phoenix has taken the lead and they will be the first city in America to eradicate a homeless veterans issue."

Mayor Stanton says the goal is to target those who have been chronically homeless -- living on the streets for more than a year.
