'Adopted' family gets early Christmas from Volunteers of America, Mich.

Christmas is coming early for the Craigmiles family, but it may be the only Christmas they have this year.

Kimyatta Craigmiles and her daughters, Icelyn and Queen, have endured more than any family should. Kimyatta applied for Michigan's Adopt a Family program through Volunteers of America, an organization that provides food, toys and clothing to families in need.

7-year-old Icelin was born with Hypoplasic left heart syndrome. She has had four heart surgeries and needs a heart transplant, but Kimyatta says doctors told her Icelin may not be a viable candidate for a transplant and to prepare to put Icelin on hospice.

Volunteers of America has been around for 21 years. Their first year, in 1993, they served 50 Michigan families; last year they served four thousand families, but the list seems endless.

"Currently we have seven thousand families in our database system that are looking for some assistance, so we definitely know that there's a great need and are very appreciative for all the sponsors that do call us and want to help those families," Erica Medvinsky says.

She delivered some gifts to the family.
