2 Arizona students chosen as Heisman program finalists

EL MIRAGE, Ariz. -

It's one of the top honors a high school student can be chosen for.

Two Arizona high school seniors were picked as our state winners for the Wendy's High School Heisman program.  They will now compete against students from other states for the national award.

I caught up with one of Arizona's two finalists and he has some big plans.

It's hard to watch the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan, but one valley teen is glued to it.

"It is really sad, people work their whole lives and they lost everything due to the natural disaster," said Hector Gonzalez Magono.

And this senior at Dysart High school is planning to go to college, get a law degree and then change the world.

"I want to start my own business.. that is to prevent natural disasters from happening, like hurricanes and tornadoes," he said.

He is the pride of Dysart High School.  Long before he received the award, he's a good athlete and a good student.

"Probably the hardest working athlete and student that I have seen," said cross country coach Dave Ostrus.

And he also mentors 8th graders who are struggling with life and school.  He will be missed when he graduates in the spring.  He's heading to the east coast for college.

"I don't want my life to go to waste.  I want to do something, make a positive impact in our world, our society, I want people to remember me," said Hector.

Hector Gonzales Magano -- a name to remember 10 years from now.

The other Arizona finalist is from Coolidge High School.  Her name is Tyrza Van Horn.

The High School Heisman award is now in its 20th year and is awarded in conjunction with the well known Heisman award given at the end of the college football season.
