Detroit police fighting proposed disability healthcare change

DETROIT (WJBK) -- The Detroit police union is fighting a proposed new health insurance policy.

The president of the Detroit Police Officers Association, Mark Diaz, says officers were notified that if they apply for disability their spouse and children could be dropped from their insurance, and officers will only receive 200 dollars a month.

"This, in essence, tells our frontline heroes that if they are injured in the line of duty that they're on their own from that point forward," Mark Diaz tells Fox 2's Randy Wimbley.

Diaz adds this change would hurt morale and recruiting efforts. "Who wants to be a police officer in a city where the health benefits are obviously terrible?" Diaz asks.

Bill Nowling from the emergency manager's office says the proposal is still being negotiated, but family's won't be dropped.
