Verizon data network problems

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

If you can't get on the web or download files on your Verizon cell phone as quickly as you once could, there is a reason.

Verizon customers are seeing slower data speeds because they're actually getting bumped off Verizon's LTE network to the older 3G network. Basically, the company hasn't been able to keep up with the fast growth of data usage in big cities, including New York.

The company's own chief financial officer just publicly admitted Verizon's infrastructure in major metropolitan cities cannot keep up with demand.

"Verizon's 4G service is being bumped down to 3G service as a result of limited infrastructure and increased demand for LTE," said Daniel Howley, a senior writer for laptopmag.com. "So more people who jump on, the lower the signal strength for every customer."

Howley said if you're one of those customers having issues there isn't much you can do about it.

"Basically have to ride it out till Verizon ups their capacity," he said.

We asked Verizon about the problem directly. The company sent a statement: "Verizon Wireless continues to invest in our infrastructure in the New York Metro region, providing our customers with fast, reliable service. Over the past decade, Verizon Wireless has invested more than $3 billion in the region to increase the coverage and capacity of our network. As our CFO said, 'we have been working very diligently … we're going to be in an excellent position by the end of this year with everything that we are doing.'"

The company said the service should be back to normal by 2014. If you cannot wait, Howley said AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint are all getting better service -- at least in New York City.

An earlier version of this story stated that Verizon did not grant an on-camera interview to Fox 5.  Fox 5 only asked for a written statement and did not ask for an on-camera interview.
