Bank robbery toy: Kids can act out heist with toy gun, crowbar

Posted: Updated:

Here's a Christmas gift for the little criminal in your house: an action figure set that depicts a robbery, complete with a gun toting stickup artist and a happy looking bank worker who hands over the money.

Kids can create their own bank robbery scene with this 126 piece toy set. Toy maker Playmobil says it makes toys that can help kids recognize good guys and bad guys, but law enforcement doesn't come in this set -- police are sold separately.

Would you want your kids' imagination running wild with this?

Some details aren't left to the imagination -- like the gun that looks like a pistol on one of the criminal's hands and a bag for the loot in the other.  The bank manager handing over the money -- and the crowbar used in this scene to break open an ATM to get the money.

"It's wrong," said Trevor McCullough, a parent.  Just the box left him in disbelief.

"..just in case they couldn't visualize what the robbery actually does, this is a real game.. this is real," he said.

It's real and on shelves at Toys R Us for $55.

"Shows the crime and it shows the criminal and you can act out everything as the criminal. It's like what's gonna stop them from playing out shooting the bank teller?  That's disturbing to me," said Jessica Wiren.

Playmobil has defended their bank robbery toy set, saying they've been making police toy sets for 35 years now and toys like these can help kids recognize the difference between good and evil.

Our 'cops' and 'robbers', in the guise of policemen, police cars, criminals and jails, enable these scenarios to be created" according to a statement on Playmobil's Facebook page.

"I don't think it teaches them anything good," said McCullough.  "I think it teaches them its okay to rob a bank."

Another parent, Audra Carr, adds "..children are being the robbers and it's okay to be a robber and I don't approve of that."

Playmobil has a whole line of 'city action' toy sets geared toward kids ages 4 through 10.  We found one online titled, "thief with safe and getaway car.'   The toy maker also makes plenty of police sets; kids can catch bad guys with K-9 officers and helicopters.

"A 4-year-old isn't going to get the concept of this.. how police stop them and this is what's wrong. It's a toy.. they're going to think this is the way things should be," said Christal Gudgell, a parent.

Playmobil is a European toy company, and it's been around for nearly four decades.  Parents and anti-gun campaigners in Europe have voiced their opinions about the line of thief toys, but it appears Playmobil does not have any intention of pulling these types of toys off of shelves.
