Troy's Excellent Adventures: Rock Crawling

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

This is the perfect time of year here in Arizona to get out and do some 4-wheeling, so why not take it to the next level?

There's an extreme form of off-roading called rock crawling.

What a rush -- rock crawling is exactly what it sounds like.  Taking super cool vehicles up super steep rocks.  So get in and hang on for an excellent adventure.

This isn't your typical 4-wheeling, not even close.

We went to the mountains near Black Canyon City to put these highly modified 4-wheelers to the test.

Sure they can fly down wide trails, but what makes these rigs special is their ability to get over seemingly any obstacle.

"You can drive down a paved road.  That's easy.  I'd rather drive down one where you can drive over boulders the size of other cars," said Jeremy Hammer.

Hammer owns Fly-N-Hi Performance Center in Phoenix.  He and his buddies were out for a little Sunday drive and they took me along.

The rock crawlers have huge tires, with soft rubber that grips the rock.  Their suspension is amazing. The steering is operated using a powerful hydraulic system.  Bottom line: they can do some incredible things.

"It's pretty amazing when you look at it.  This is a sheer face -- 4.5 feet tall and these rock crawlers.. they go right up over the top of it."

And they look pretty cool doing it.  When you are riding in the crawler and hit one of these big walls, it feels like you are going to roll for sure, but all of these drivers have a lot of skill and nerve.

"I like the challenge.  I always find something that keeps me on my toes," said Uriel Varela.

And it's pretty cool to ride along too.

"At first, I was a little scared, but then I got used to it and now I like the thrill of it," said Mayte Alonso.

Near the end of the trail, we reached our toughest obstacle -- a wall about 9 feet high.  It took some doing, but everybody got over it.

And when they're done, even though they just conquered it, these crawlers treat the trail with respect.

"When you have a pristine trail, you want to keep it that way, so thank God for the guys who come out here and keep it clean and we'll keep on truckin."

Truckin' and crawlin'!

You may have noticed we were on what's called a Warn winch to get over that last rock formation, but the other two rigs made it on their own.

Thanks to the guys at Fly-N-Hi for bringing us out.
