Drivers beware of strong winds expected throughout Arizona

PHOENIX -

Strong winds are bringing up dust in central Arizona and causing extremely-limited visibility near Casa Grande, according to the National Weather Service.

Spokesperson Garin Groff says the ADOT operations center in Phoenix was on high alert Friday, keeping a close eye on highways and adding more message boards in anticipation of a severe wind storm.

Chuck Wood is one of the traffic control operators scanning the horizon for trouble.

"A lot of times, it's from DPS because they're out tin the field, they have visuals," he said.

ADOT is also putting more personnel out on the field.  According to Groff, crews are positioned along Interstate 10 all the way from Phoenix to Casa Grande through Tucson, in part because of the deadly dust storm that claimed three lives last month.

"This is really about us having some notice.. now we've known for about a day now about high winds moving in," said Groff.

As soon as traffic control operators are alerted, they update the message boards you see on highways and it posts immediately.

"The dust.. the wind could start kicking up.. we'll change from advisory and blowing dust," said Wood.

ADOT has 200 cameras stationed throughout metro Phoenix, all positioned to spot those storms when they roll in.
