EAST LYME, Conn. (AP) - A Connecticut woman imprisoned for 27 years for murder has been released early after state officials took the rare step of granting her clemency.

Bonnie Jean Foreshaw thanked her supporters after walking out of York Correctional Institution in East Lyme on Friday morning.

The 66-year-old Foreshaw was sentenced to 45 years in prison for premeditated murder in the 1986 killing of a pregnant woman, Joyce Amos, in Hartford. The fetus didn't survive. Foreshaw had argued that she shot Amos by accident while defending herself against another person.

Foreshaw was scheduled to be freed in August 2017. Despite opposition from Amos' family, the state Board of Pardons and Paroles granted her clemency last month. Its chairman said the board concluded Foreshaw is not a danger to the community.
