NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A Long Island police officer is being credited with saving several people from a burning house.

It happened about 6:30 a.m. in Bay Shore.

Suffolk County Police say that officer Christopher Germano responded to a house fire on Wisconsin Ave. and say that the second floor was engulfed in flames.

He grabbed a ladder from a neighbor and climbed to the second floor. An adult handed a 3-year-old boy to Germano and brought him down to the ground.

Germano then went into the first floor of the house and told several adults, a 13-year-old boy and a 6-year-old boy to get out.

Officer Germano then used a pull-down ladder to get to the second floor and rescued a 35-year-old woman and her 12-year-old son.

The Brentwood Fire Department extinguished the fire.

A 62-year-old man who lives in the home was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore for non-life-threatening injuries.  Officer Germano suffered smoke inhalation and was take to Southside Hospital where he was treated and released.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
