LUNENBURG, Ma -

The small Massachusetts town of Lunenburg is now the center of controversy after a 13-year-old boy was the target of a hate crime. Now, many in the town are standing up for him.

Lunenburg High School freshman Issac Phillips and his family became victims of a hate crime sometime last week when the phrase "Knights don't need [the n-word]" was spray painted on their house.

Phillips is a member of the Blue Knights football team. His father is half black, and his mother is white. The family believes a member of the team is responsible, but so far, no one has come forward.

The town held a vigil to show their solidarity and sadness after the incident.

Phillips bravely stepped forward to speak at the vigil, and was met with roaring applause.

"Hi, my name is Issac and I came to show my appreciation of your support, but I'm also disgusted."

The school canceled last Friday's football game, but Phillips and his father are still disappointed at the coaches, who did not attend the vigil.

Issac continued, "I'm confused on why my coaches haven't reached out to me. We're supposed to be a team. Coaches are supposed to be a role model. Well, if this is my team and these are my coaches, I can say it's a sad day to be a Blue Knight."

Most of the team made it to the event, and voiced their surprise and disgust.

One team member said, "We're a family, so we stick together. I think it may have not been a teammate. I have no idea."

Still, Phillips says that it's not enough for him to return to school or the team, and he's contemplating transferring.

"He is so beyond hurt right now that he doesn't know who to trust," Issac's father Anthony Phillips said.
