Newton County Sheriff's Office launches app to combat gangs

Posted: Updated:
NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. -

Help is now only a click away for Newton County residents concerned about possible gang activity. Modern technology is making it easier for them to contact police without fear of retaliation.

The Newton County Sheriff's Office has launched a gang intelligence website using specialized software. Residents can now submit detailed information and pictures anonymously to the sheriff's office over the Internet and via the new "Tipsubmit" mobile app.

The person calling receives an immediate response from deputies monitoring the site.

"This is just to give us another tool to use in our tool box to help fight crime, solve cases to help the community solve cases," said Robert Geddy of the Newton County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said this is a proactive move; gangs are not a big problem in newton county and they want to keep it that way by combining old fashioned police work with 21st century technology.

"People tend to not want to get involved when you talk about gangs, and it's just an avenue to give to them to reach out to law enforcement without them knowing who you are," Geddy said.

The program is currently only for those reporting gang activity, but the Newton County Sheriff's Office plans to expand the program to allow residents to anonymously report other types of crime using the same tools in the future.

Residents can still call the Newton County Sheriff's Office with a question. They should also dial 911 in case of an emergency.
