Angela Spaccia Case Continues

Posted: Updated:

Will she walk ?

Angela Spaccia may just ''walk'' on the 13 corruption counts she's facing at the City of Bell.  That doesn't necessarily mean she is free of any guilt or wrongdoing, what it might mean is that the prosecution hasn't clearly shown to the jury that she committed crimes.

Sure, she was paid a lot of money she said; sure she was kept on full salary and benefits for months and months while she was off work taking care of ill family members; sure, she got loans from the city and cashed in vacation days to pay them back ;sure, she was working on a lucrative retirement plan for herself and her former boss Robert Rizzo;  but hey, she said to the jury over and over again ,( paraphrasing) Unethical? yes. Illegal? No. Excessive? Yes. Illegal? No.  Even ''insane'' was a word she, herself used to describe her salary and benefits, which at their peak  topped $500,000  a year as the Assistant to the City Manager of a city of about 35,000 people.

The reason I say she might walk, and I emphasize might, is that it's going to be up to the prosecution to explain in very clear language to the jury exactly what crimes she committed in accepting all this money, and how her excuse of ''Everyone told me it was OK,''  isn't good enough.

So far , it seems to me they haven't done that.   Keep in mind,  it only takes one juror to hang the jury , or to buy her story that she was simply an innocent hard-working employee who didn't know that what she was doing was illegal ( says the prosecution.)

By blaming everything on her former boss Rizzo, who pleaded guilty to no fewer than 69 corruption charges, she's gambling, but it's a gamble she might win.
