ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

It's been more than 8 months since Jennifer Carroll resigned as the Lieutenant Governor of Florida, and Gov. Rick Scott still will not say when he will name a replacement.  His office floated a trial balloon last week with 4 names on it, including Seminole County Sheriff Don Eslinger. Gov. Scott was willing to speak about why he could pick Sheriff Eslinger.

"The Sheriff is a wonderful person.  He's done a great job as Sheriff.  He cares about our state. He's a statewide leader."

Lake Mary Mayor David Mealor thinks Eslinger is a strong candidate, pointing out that he used to run the Florida Sheriff's Association, and was important to Mealor when he was a state representative.

"One of the things we knew was the go to person in law enforcement at the statewide level was Don Eslinger."

Politics could play a part. People from inside the Republican Party have been pushing Scott to pick a Hispanic, a woman, someone from South Florida, or all of the above in order to help him win reelection.

The governor could also be floating the names as something to distract the media while he looks for someone else that is out of the spotlight.  When we asked him if it was time to pick a lieutenant governor, we got a standard answer.

"There's a lot of great people in this state we've got that I could pick. I'm going to find the right person that is going to continue to what I ran on, the opportunity economy."

The other names that were floated by the Governor's Office as possible picks are State Senator Tom Lee of Brandon, Hillsborough County Commissioner Sandy Murman, and St. John's School Superintendent Joseph Joyner.   Joyner has already withdrawn his name from consideration.
