Surveillance video taken from a Clermont Walgreens shows a Lake County grandmother walking into the pharmacy around 8:30 Tuesday morning.
"She left a juvenile in the car and ran in real quick," said Lt. Mike McMaster of the Clermont Police Department. "When she came back out, actually before she got in, she could hear the juvenile screaming, screaming for her."
In the video, you can see the suspect in a green shirt trying to make a getaway, sprinting past the exit doors of the store, followed by the young boy who yells for help. Police said the boy was inside the car when the man tried to steal it.
"The juvenile says that he walked back and forth a couple times by the door, probably debated on whether or not he was going to do it and making sure that there was nobody in the area," McMaster said. "As soon as he opened the door, the child screamed he took off."
The video shows workers run out of the store. It was too late; the suspect was long gone, running on foot. Police said it's likely the suspect didn't know the child was in the car, because of its tinted windows.
"We set a perimeter. We had assistance from Lake County Sheriff's Office trying to locate the individual, and unfortunately, we were unable to locate him at that time," McMaster said.
McMaster said detectives are counting on fingerprint evidence to link them to a suspect.
"We're hoping that, when the vehicle was processed, we were able to obtain latent fingerprints, so our hope is that those finger prints are going to bring something back for us."
